A senior Congress official familiar with the developments said that in case of non- partisanship of Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP)- Samajwadi Party (SP) coalition, the party has to be ready for any “Program”. Thus both the BSP and the SP are still silent about the partnership with the Congress. They also stayed away from the December 10 meeting of opposition parties.

The BSP is holding a meeting in Lucknow in Mayawati’s 63rd birthday on January 15, in which She has invited several potential colleagues. Till now, Congress is not one of them. The Congress will hold meetings at different levels soon and will start the process of identifying potential Candidates for the UP, which send the maximum number of representative, 80, to the 543-member Lok Sabha.

Victory in the Hindi heartland states has conquered the Congress and strengthened its cadre across the country. Prakash Joshi, in- charge of the All India Congress  Committee of Uttar Pradesh, said, “ we are already in the election mode and we have started  preparations for the 2019 elections.”

“It will be decided by the party high command whether or not to become part of the Maha Coalition but as an organization, we have to be ready Challenge and any Challenge,” Joshi said.

State Congress leaders have suggested to the central leadership that the BSP-SP alliance can not give too many seats to the party and suggested plan B to be prepared. Although there is no formal talk with BSP-SP, the discussion is that both the parties can give only two seats to Amethi and Rae Bareli. While Congress Chief Rahul Gandhi represents Amethi, his mother, and president of United Progressive Alliance, Sonia Gandhi is a Lok Sabha member from Rae Bareli.

A leader of the BSP refused to comment on the matter but said that the Congress “is worthy that he sowed”, in MP, Rajasthan, and Chhattisgarh. Spokesman Abdul Hafiz Gandhi said: “So far, it would be hasty to comment on the formation of the coalition.” We believe in the formation of a coalition of like-minded parties in UP. I can not say whether the Congress will be a member of the coalition or not. Every political party, including the Congress, is free to strengthen the party base and select its candidates. ”

Personally, Congress leaders say that they will demand 15 seats from both the parties, but are ready to settle at 8-10. In March, due to the by-elections in Gorakhpur and Phulpur and by claiming the SP’s claim on two seats, the Congress lost its power of bargaining because of the request to withdraw from the contest against the grand old party. Both Sonia Gandhi and Rahul have often called opposition parties to remove their differences in the states and to create consensus on the national level.

Delhi-based political analyst N Bhaskar Rao said: “They need to create a well-thought-out strategy to be prepared to face any situation.”
