Tamil Nadu government to introduce bill today for exemption from NEET- student’s suicide create- The Tamil Nadu government will introduce a bill in the Assembly on Monday seeking President’s assent to exempt medical candidates from the state from the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET). In fact, the suicide of a 19-year-old student before the examination has created a political storm in the state. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin on Sunday said that NEET is a big issue in the country. Stalin said in a Twitter post in Tamil, “One more death over NEET… Tomorrow we will bring the Permanent Exemption Bill for NEET. Let us see NEET as a big issue in India.”
Stalin’s remarks came after a 19-year-old medical candidate was found dead at his home in Salem. He committed suicide before appearing for the NEET exam for the third time. The Tamil Nadu government in a recent policy note said that an official committee has suggested enactment of a new law for admission to professional degrees like medical on the basis of marks obtained in qualifying tests and exemption from NEET.
The bills passed in 2017 during the previous AIADMK regime to exempt Tamil Nadu from NEET did not get the assent of the President.
The AIADMK blamed the DMK regime for the student’s death and Stalin hit out at the Center over the matter. Stalin alleged that the Center does not understand the enormous hardships faced by the students of NEET and its “carelessness” and “stubbornness” are responsible for the suicides of the students.
Condoling the death of the student, Stalin said, “Our legal struggle against NEET now rests on the government.” He said that it is the responsibility and duty of the state government to create a good future for the students and realizing this, our struggle will continue till the central government cancels NEET.
The Tamil Nadu chief minister said his government would seek the support of all other states on the issue by contacting their counterparts. “I am sure we will win,” he said.
