Pakistani journalist raised the issue of Kashmir in the United Nations Security Council- India has given a clear signal to the world with its tough stand on Jammu and Kashmir as soon as the world’s most powerful body becomes the President of the United Nations Security Council. In a press conference on becoming the President of the United Nations Security Council, Indian Ambassador TS Tirumurti stopped speaking after a Pakistani journalist raised the issue of Kashmir, reminding him of Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (POK). Tirumurti said PoK needs to be vacated to change its status.

Indian Ambassador Tirumurti, who became the President of the United Nations Security Council for the month of August, once again made it clear that Jammu and Kashmir is an integral and inseparable part of India. He also said that if there is a need for any change in anyone’s status, it is related to the evacuation of Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (PoK). India, a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for the term 2021-22, has taken over the presidency of this powerful UN organ for the month of August on a shift basis.

‘Jammu and Kashmir is an integral and inseparable part of India’

Speaking at the Security Council’s ‘Program of Work’ at the United Nations Headquarters here, Tirumurti said India will host major events on important topics of maritime security, counter-terrorism and peace. Responding to a Pakistani journalist’s question about Jammu and Kashmir and the abrogation of Article 370 there, he said, “In the beginning, I want to make some things very clear that Jammu and Kashmir is an integral and inseparable part of India. I think it is necessary to accept it. And the issues related to the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir are an internal matter of India. Council, whenever the matter was raised before it, almost all its members agreed that the issue was not a matter of discussion for the Council.

To another question about the statement made by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on the situation in Jammu and Kashmir on August 8, 2019, Tirumurti said, “As I told you that Jammu and Kashmir is an integral and inseparable part of India. If any change in status is needed, it is related to the vacating of Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (PoK).” The Secretary-General in 2019 recalled the Shimla Agreement of 1972, which states that Jammu and Kashmir should be given final status. shall be determined by peaceful means in accordance with the Charter of the United Nations.
