In a heart-wrenching turn of events, four Indian students from Yaroslav-the-Wise Novgorod State University tragically drowned in the Volkhov river in Russia. Among them was Jishan Ashpak Pinjari, who was on a video call with his family moments before the tragedy.

The Fatal Walk Along the Volkhov River

The students—Harshal Anantrao Desale, Jishan Ashpak Pinjari, Jia Firoj Pinjari, and Malik Gulamgous Mohammad Yakub—were taking a leisurely walk along the Volkhov river when they decided to enter the water. Unfortunately, what started as an innocent outing turned fatal.

Tragic Details from Jalgaon, Maharashtra

Jishan Pinjari was reportedly on a video call with his parents during the incident. A family member recounted the harrowing moments: “His father and other family members were pleading with Jishan and the others to come out of the river when a strong wave swept them away.”

Survivors and Immediate Response

Nisha Bhupesh Sonawane, another student, survived the incident and is currently receiving medical care. Officials from Jalgaon district, where Jishan and his sister Jia hailed from, are making arrangements to repatriate the bodies. Harshal Desale was also from Jalgaon, specifically from Bhadgaon.

Official Statements and University Response

Jalgaon district collector Ayush Prasad confirmed the efforts to bring the bodies back to India. The Yaroslav-the-Wise Novgorod State University administration expressed deep condolences in a message to the Indian envoy in Russia. They described the incident as an unexpected tragedy that occurred during the students’ free time.

Eyewitness Accounts and University’s Support

University representatives stated that they are closely monitoring Nisha’s condition and providing all necessary support. “The university informed the parents immediately and is working closely with respective agencies in Russia,” they said, adding that they have requested the Indian envoy’s assistance in repatriating the bodies.

Attempt to Save a Friend

Russian media reports indicated that the incident started when a female student, who waded out into the river, got into trouble. Her four companions attempted to rescue her but were tragically swept away by strong currents.

Educational Pursuits in Russia

The students, aged 18-20, were in Russia pursuing medical education in Veliky Novgorod. The Consulate General of India in St. Petersburg confirmed their academic background and expressed condolences for the tragic loss.

Moving Forward

As arrangements are being made to bring the bodies back to India, the families and friends of these young students are left to grapple with the sudden and heartbreaking loss. The incident serves as a somber reminder of the unpredictable nature of life and the importance of safety measures during recreational activities.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and friends of Harshal Anantrao Desale, Jishan Ashpak Pinjari, Jia Firoj Pinjari, and Malik Gulamgous Mohammad Yakub during this difficult time.
