Chinese Cyber Espionage: India- Defense and Telecom on target of cyberspies

Chinese Cyber Espionage: India- Defense and Telecom on target of cyber spies- The Chinese army is conducting cyber espionage in some other countries including India. Associated with it, Redfoxtrot has targeted aerospace and defence, government, telecommunications, mining and research organizations in India. Redfoxtrot has been active since 2014 and is attached to Unit 69010 of the Chinese Army PLA. Apart from India, the other countries that are on its target are Afghanistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.

Recorded Future, the world’s largest intelligence provider for enterprise security, disclosed on Thursday cyber espionage activity involving the Chinese government-sponsored group Redfoxtrot. It has been given this name by Insect Group, the threat research arm of Recorded Future. The Insect Group has identified a special relationship between the Chinese military intelligence system and Redfoxtrot.

Recorded Future’s large-scale automated network traffic analytics and expert analysis have detected targeted intrusions to areas in bordering Asian countries.

Active since 2014, Redfoxtrot primarily targets aerospace and defence, government, telecommunications, mining and research organizations in Afghanistan, India, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.

Redfoxtrot maintains a large amount of operational infrastructure and uses both commonly used bespoke and publicly available malware on behalf of Chinese cyberespionage groups.

Christopher Alberg, CEO and co-founder of Recorded Future, said: “The recent activity of the People’s Liberation Army has largely been a black box for the intelligence community. Consistent and extensive surveillance and collection of intelligence is critical to thwarting adversaries and informing the security situation of an organization or government.
